The Sharon Inkster Seventh-day Adventist Church recently held a heartfelt Deacons Day celebration, recognizing the quiet dedication and steadfast service of its deacon ministry. The event was thoughtfully organized by Sister Poala Prude-Hall, leader of Mustard Seed Ministries, and Hospitality Leader Sister Willa-Jean Bandy.
According to Elder Daphne Springer, the inspiration for Deacons Day was simple yet deeply meaningful—to honor those who faithfully serve behind the scenes. “It was important to let them know they are appreciated and to affirm their hard work,” she shared.
Honoring Unsung Heroes
While the celebration did not follow a specific theme, it was centered around expressing gratitude to Head Deacon Frank Stevenson and the dedicated team serving alongside him. For many in the congregation, this recognition was long overdue. Elder Springer noted that, as far back as she could remember, the deacons had never been formally honored.
Head Deacon Frank Stevenson has served the church with unwavering commitment for over 40 years, including 13 years in leadership. He is known for ensuring the church’s upkeep—inside and out—and for consistently going above and beyond the call of duty. “All our deacons are unsung heroes, quietly performing tasks,” Elder Springer said.
Service, Dedication, and Community Impact
At Sharon Church, deacons serve faithfully each week, opening the church and attending to whatever needs arise. Their work nurtures the church family, maintains an inviting worship environment, and strengthens community connections.
During the service, a dedication prayer was offered for the deacon ministry. Head Deacon Stevenson received a special plaque, while each deacon was presented with a certificate and a mini prayer plaque in appreciation of their service. Following worship, the congregation gathered for a fellowship dinner in honor of the deacons.
Guest speaker remarks highlighted the biblical role and responsibilities of deacons as servant-leaders, reinforcing the significance of their ministry within the church. The celebration was warmly received by members and leaders alike. Deacon Stevenson expressed, “We felt really special and appreciated.”
A Personal Moment and a Promising Future
For Elder Springer, the event held personal significance as her husband is also a deacon. “I was truly honored to see my husband being recognized for his service and commitment to the members of Sharon,” she reflected.
Looking ahead, Sharon Inkster SDA Church is committed to building on this spirit of appreciation and service. Deacons are becoming more hospitable and intentional in assisting members. The church is also investing in the next generation by training young adult men to serve as junior deacons.
Through Deacons Day, the congregation not only celebrated faithful service but also renewed its dedication to fostering a culture of gratitude, leadership, and care within the body of Christ.
